About the Institute

The Institute of Rethinking, is the home of critical thinking. Rooted within values of civility, plurality and deliberative cultivation and with critical thinking.

our story

The Institute of Rethinking has evolved from what was — and remains to this day —  a successful university society, The Rethinking Society. Founded in 2016 by four students at the University of Exeter. The Rethinking Society creates a space within the higher education system for students where critical thinking is not only a means but an end in itself.

The Rethinking Society aims to: stifle the proliferation of ‘belief-gaps’ and societal polarisation which is at present threatening the cohesiveness of our democracies; cultivate and enrich both new and existing ideas, solutions and politics within our society and raise the benchmark and setting new standards for deliberation, discussion and thinking within our society.

In the summer of 2019 we launched the Institute of Rethinking, aiming to bring the aims and values of the Rethinking Society to the wider world.

Built upon academic, deliberative and pluralist foundations, the Rethinking Institute is the summation of three pillars.

We create spaces for ‘rethinking’. This takes place on our online platform, but also at societies at universities.

Our content is composed of our articles, policy reports, recommendations and thought pieces.

The Rethinking Network brings together policy makers, influencers, academics and students across the UK.

OUR OBJECTIVES:

  1. Uphold freedom of speech by ensuring mutual respect between individuals.

  2. Stifle the proliferation of ‘belief-gaps’ and societal polarisation which is at present threatening the cohesiveness of our democracies.

  3. Cultivate and enrich both new and existing ideas, solutions and politics within our society.

  4. Raise the benchmark and setting new standards for deliberation, discussion and thinking within our society.
