What We Believe

The institute is the natural home of critical thinking and critical thinkers. It champions deliberation and self-scrutiny before all else. It’s values are of plurality, civility and critical cultivation; it’s purpose is to rediscover the critical spirit, championing its growth; its politics is none.

The Institute of Rethinking is first and foremost focused on promoting Free Speech. Indeed, we consider that to think critically, a person must be able to speak free from societal pressures. One must be willing to challenge and criticise dominating doxas and beliefs to open new and innovative ways of thinking.

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind”
— John Stuart Mill

We do appreciate recent efforts to counter hate speech but believe them to be mostly counter-productive as they tend to reinforce political polarisation. We believe rational deliberation within a democratic public sphere to be a more appropriate way of approaching extreme views.

Our values:

1 - INTELLECTUAL CIVILITY

Engage in constructive and respectful discussions without insult or hostility.

2 - EXPOSURE TO, AND DIVERSITY OF IDEAS

Guarantee the exposure to a multitude of ideas and perspectives, that would provide the necessary challenge to their preexisting assumptions and rationales.

3 - DELIBERATIVE CULTIVATION

Establish a space for deliberation between individuals with different convictions, through which an enriched and robust politics, society and ideas can emerge.

4 - SOCIETAL ELEVATION

Raise the standard and norms of debate within society through the establishment of a space where critical thinking is the purpose.
